Outstanding car-integrated connectivity with Volvo Sensus Connected Touch
Volvo Car Group introduces a new, intuitive connectivity system that gives the Volvo owner outstanding possibilities. Among the solutions in the innovative Sensus Connected Touch is an enhanced voice-activation of all music sources integrated in the system.
“You can play the track you want just by saying its name. This capable voice-activation is an excellent example of how we have designed Sensus Connected Touch around modern car owners’ desire to remain connected also when driving,” says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Car Group.
The increased popularity and rapid growth of music streaming services, as well as Internet radio, has moved customer expectations on car connectivity into a new dimension.
“Today, most drivers use music and radio services at home and in their smart phone. By creating this smooth possibility to integrate them in the car, we make the services easier and safer to use while driving. You can operate most of the possibilities in Sensus Connected Touch without taking your eyes of the road or your hands off the steering wheel,” says Lex Kerssemakers.
Can be retrofitted
Sensus is name Volvo uses for all its HMI (Human Machine Interface) functionality and Sensus Connected Touch is a dealer-fitted accessory.
It goes on sale in May 2013 and can be fitted in new Volvos (V40, S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80). Sensus Connected Touch can also be retrofitted in used cars from model year 2011 and onwards that have the Sensus system with a 7-inch display.
“Sensus Connected Touch turns the 7-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen you can use even when wearing gloves – a world first in cars,” says Håkan Hellman, Product Manager Infotainment and Connectivity at Volvo Car Group.
“To offer the user maximum flexibility, the system can also be operated via the steering wheel and centre stack controls. And music and radio stations can also be voice-controlled,” he adds.
Connection is made either via a car-mounted 3G/4G-dongle or via the driver’s mobile phone. Internet data is transferred via Wi-Fi between the mobile phone and the Sensus Connected Touch. It is also possible to share a Wi-Fi network with everyone in the car when using the dongle. “The intuitive user interface, a very rapid browser response and the wide choice of around 20 functions and apps are benefits that make Sensus Connected Touch outstanding compared with our main competitors’ solutions,” says Håkan Hellman.
Wide choice of functions and apps
The Sensus Connected Touch user has access to:
- Full Internet browsing (not available when driving). The open browser allows Java, HTML 5,animations and moving pictures/films.
- Internet streaming of music.
- Internet radio (TuneIn and Live Radio) with thousands of channels from all over the world.
- On-line (Google) map and search.
- Embedded connected 3D navigation with online traffic info and dangerous zone warnings.
- Free parking locator and weather information.
- A number of native and web applications. Applications in the driver’s mobile phone can be ”mirrored” in the car’s display when using the Parrot Smart Link App.
- Appstore for new functions & updates.
- A Volvo service locator that presents a list of nearby Volvo workshops and helps the driver to contact chosen one.
“Roadtrip is another great feature that can read out Wikipedia information about interesting points along the route via the audio system,” adds Håkan Hellman.
The development of Sensus Connected Touch gained momentum late in 2011 when Volvo Car Group started sourcing for a creative supplier with a suitable platform.
“We needed a powerful processing hardware platform with first-class functional and graphical features and the capacity to handle a future expansion. We decided to partner with the French supplier Parrot, which presented the best solution,” recalls Håkan Hellman.
To pave the way for a quick market introduction, Volvo Cars selected Android’s open operating system for Sensus Connected Touch. The ability to upgrade functionality on-line is a necessity for providing apps.
“Sensus Connected Touch is a groundbreaking example of our commitment to providing customers with a connected car that helps manage their connected lives in an intuitive and safe way,” concludes Lex Kerssemakers.
